LASIK is a cutting edge technology in its entire modern splendor, waiting to assist you with eye problems such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness, presbyopia, or astigmatism. LASIK is the acronym for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.

With the application of LASIK, the above mentioned vision deficiencies are treated in an extremely efficient manner with the highest level of precision. While LASIK is a laser procedure, it is quite different from most other laser treatments for the eye. Not only is the surgery performed in fine detail, but the healing is spontaneous.

In the LASIK procedure, a protective flap is created in the front of the eye (cornea) with a microkeratome. The flap is then folded back to expose the deep layers of the cornea. Laser treatment is then performed using the Excimer Laser on the deeper layers to change the focal point of incoming light rays. The central cornea is flattened to correct nearsightedness, steepened for farsightedness and rounded for astigmatism. The flap is then repositioned and it adheres without the need for stitches.

Customized LASIK utilizes a sophisticated device to scan the eyes and records all the relevant data that is unique to each eye. Information such as the structure of the eyes and the high and low points of the cornea are all competently registered by this device. The laser is then used to treat each and every point in a very specific manner.

The eye is numbed with anesthetic drops. The eyelids are held open with a special retainer, so the patient does not have to worry about blinking. Movement of the eye is usually not a problem because the patient is motivated to look at the fixation light in the laser and Dr. Gold uses state-of-the-art "tracking" technology. Antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and lubricating drops are used following the procedure. After your LASIK procedure, you will leave Liberty Vision wearing sunglasses, and go home to sleep for 4 to 5 hours during which time the flap will adhere in the correct position. You can expect very cloudy vision until after you rest your eyes.

The outstanding efficiency of LASIK must be used in the hands of a LASIK expert. It is more than imperative to make an intense search for that ‘just right’ doctor who has years of experience to his or her credit. Prior to actual surgery, the doctor will run comprehensive tests on both eyes to ensure that the patient is healthy and fit enough to undergo LASIK treatment. Any identified eye illnesses will be remedied before the doctor can begin the LASIK procedure.
