Long Term Study Shows that PRK/Epi-LASIK is Nearly 100% Safe
Dr. Gold discusses a long term study from University Hospital in London, where 46 patients were followed over the past 17-20 years after having PRK, a form of laser vision correction that does not involve cutting the cornea. Evaluations were done on the efficacy, safety and stability of PRK as opposed to LASIK, which does involve cutting a flap in the cornea. The study found that there were no serious complications with night vision, or with the cornea eroding over time. The correction of vision persisted over the 18 years, with a statistically insignificant amount of change. The safety index was 0.998 (almost 100% safe). There were zero cases of late progressive thinning of the cornea. This is one more study that proves that PRK is much safer than LASIK. Epi-LASIK is the modern version of PRK, which is what Dr. Gold performs at Liberty Vision.
