About PRK/Epi-LASIK Surgery
Can Epi-LASIK Surgery Help You?
Epi-LASIK surgery could free you from nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia with the highest level of vision correction accuracy. During a free consultation, Dr. Jeffrey Gold will conduct a series of tests to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for Epi-LASIK surgery, based on your overall health and physical condition, as well as your vision in both eyes.
If Epi-LASIK surgery is right for you, Dr. Gold and Sylvana Kent, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, will take time to explain the procedure. Sylvana has had Epi-LASIK and MonoVision and so can give you a first person description. Your eye is numbed with anesthetic drops, and the lids held open with a retainer to curtail an urge to blink. Eye movement is minimized as you focus on a fixation light, and tracked by the S4 aspect of the VISX laser as Dr. Gold performs the surgery.
Utilizing an epi-keratome he will remove the epithelium (the first layer) from the cornea to reveal the next deeper layer. The Wavescan device, which was used at your pre-op exam has scanned your eye and recorded many points of relevant data unique to that eye. With skill that comes from years of experience and thousands of successful procedures, the doctor employs an Excimer Laser to treat each specific point indicated by this scanning technology, to properly focus incoming light to the retina. The central corneal curve is meticulously sculpted to address your specific vision condition – flattened to resolve nearsightedness, steepened for farsightedness, or rounded for astigmatism.
The eye begins to heal spontaneously as soon as you take a nap. No stitches are needed.
Epi-LASIK surgery is an out-patient treatment. You go home wearing protective sunglasses provided by Liberty Vision. Your vision is slightly blurred for the first few days while the eye is protected with a special surgical contact lens which is placed, maintained, and then removed by Dr. Gold. You don’t have to deal with the lens. During those first few days there are minimal restrictions in your activities.
- Don’t rub your eyes.
- Don’t swim.
- Don’t be exposed to tobacco smoke.
- When showering, have the water hit the back of your head, not your face.
Epi-LASIK surgery is an amazing advancement in modern eye care; vision correction has never been more efficient or precise. Make sure to entrust your successful outcome to the hands of a qualified healthcare professional. Call Liberty Vision today.
