Pre-Operative Instructions

Every form of surgery has pre-operative instructions.  It is critical to follow all of these instructions precisely in order to achieve the best results.  Unlike general surgical procedures requiring general or regional anesthesia, PRK/Epi-LASIK requires only eye drops.  Dr. Gold also has his patients take a small amount of Valium for mild sedation and to help with falling asleep upon returning home.

Any Health Concerns Should be Discussed

Dr. Gold should be made aware of any significant medical issues you have before surgery.  A list of your medicines is important, as well because some medications can interfere with healing.  If you have any changes in your health after your pre-op exam but before surgery, please notify Dr. Gold, even minor things like a cold.

Preparations for Your Procedure

On the day of your procedure:

DO NOT BRING CHILDREN!   Dr. Gold loves children, but when they make noise in the waiting room it distracts him from the job at hand, which is doing his best work for your loved one!

Do not wear any makeup (eye or facial) on the day of the procedure.  Please make sure all old eye makeup has been removed thoroughly.

Do take all your regular medications that day.

Do be sure to bring all of your paperwork with you the day of surgery, having initialed each page on the bottom and signed at the back.

Do not wear hairspray, cologne, or perfume on the day of surgery as these products can interfere with the laser.

Don't wear jewelry, watches, or contact lenses.  Your contact lenses should have been out for at lease one week prior to your procedure.

Wear loose, warm, comfortable clothing, keeping in mind the surgery room is much cooler than the rest of the office.  Do not wear knitted sweaters or shirts that are "fuzzy".

Eat a light breakfast or lunch prior to your surgery.

Do not consume any caffeine, alcohol, or tobacco on the day of your surgery until after you have had surgery

You will need to have someone drive you home after the procedure.  We will not let you leave without a driver and you cannot drive yourself that day. You will be at the surgery center for about 1 hour on the day of surgery.

Planning for the Post-Operative Period

You will be instructed to go home and nap for 2 hours, after which it is fine to go about all your normal daily activities.  However you may have some discomfort and light sensitivity, so you should not plan on doing any important things for the first couple of days.

Post-Op Instructions

At the completion of your procedure you will be given very detailed post-op instructions, verbally and written.  It is essential that you understand and follow these instructions to the letter.  If you get confused or don’t remember any item, simply call the office and we will clarify everything for you.
