Post-Operative Instructions

It is critical to follow all post-operative instructions, to the letter.  Every eye drop and pill has a function in the overall healing process, including pain and infection prevention.  At the end of your procedure our staff will give you complete written and verbal instructions.  Most important is to call Dr. Gold if there is any pain.

Post-Procedure Eye Care

The first step after PRK is to go home and sleep for at least two hours. The removed epithelium will start to regenerate after you sleep for the first hour, so this nap gives your new cells a jump start.

To Do:

  • Have someone drive you home.
  • Take a nap for at least two hours.
  • Back to shower; no water in eyes.
  • Sunglasses for first six months.
  • Follow all drop & pill instructions.
  • Call Dr. Gold 24/7 for problems.

Do Not:

  • Rub your eyes.
  • Wear eye makeup the first week.
  • Be exposed to tobacco smoke.
  • Be exposed to dust, fumes, contaminants.

Report to Dr. Gold:

  • Pain.
  • Redness.
  • Watering.
  • Excessive light sensitivity.
  • Grittiness/scratchiness.

The First Few Days

As soon as you arrive home from surgery, please go to sleep for at least two hours.  Your corneal surface layer does not start to regenerate until after one hour of sleep.  When you wake up, please begin your eyedrops as you were instructed.  You may read, use the computer, watch TV, play computer games, and resume all normal activities.  You may drive as soon as the next day after surgery, using common sense as to the quality of your vision when you look out the window.  It is very important to not rub your eyes, not get water in them, do not be exposed to tobacco smoke, and do not touch your bandage contact lenses.

You may experience some temporary side effects during this time, such as:

  • Light sensitivity.
  • Halos.
  • Impaired night vision.
  • Glare.
  • Itching.
  • Discomfort.
  • Tearing.
  • Burning.
  • Watering.

These side effects should begin to disappear after the first few days.  However, for some patients, they can last a little longer.  If you experience pain, you must call Dr. Gold immediately, day or night.

Follow-Up Visits

Follow-up visits here at Liberty Vision are very important during your recovery to ensure healing is taking place properly.  The first visit is 4 days after your surgery.  At that visit your bandage contact lenses will be removed and your eyedrop instructions will be changed. Typically the next visit is 3-4 weeks later and the final visit will be three months after your surgery.
